Can We Trust Our Heart?
Creating new resolutions is a habit for most people to start a new year. We write a list of things we want to achieve this year. Things that make our hearts happy. But are those resolutions we write aligned with God’s will? The world will tell us to trust our heart, but it’s the opposite in the Scripture. Let’s see what the Scripture says about our heart.
Scripture - Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV)
"The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”
Observation
This bible verse reminds us that as humans, we have a sinful nature. Our heart is deceitful; therefore, we cannot trust our heart. Our emotions can lead us astray and lead us to sin. And if we trust our heart more than the Lord, then we think we are better than God. Always rely on God’s wisdom. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your understanding” - Proverbs 3:5
Application
Starting early this year, write your resolutions with God. Ask God what resolutions you can achieve with Him. Don’t let your heart dictate what you need to accomplish this year.
Regularly evaluate your emotions and thoughts, or your habits.
Make a habit to always rely on God, every decision you take, whether it is exercising, choosing the foods you have to eat, working, etc—make sure you ask God first before making a decision. I know it’s kind of weird to start this habit, but you’ll learn to listen to God’s voice.
Be humble. Acknowledge that we are not perfect, and we will never be. We are good because God is good. We are saved because of His grace, not because of the bible study, worship, or ministry we do.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your abundant kindness. Thank You for always reminding us that our hearts can lead us away from You. Teach us to always rely fully on You in everything we do. Forgive us for often relying more on our own hearts, Father. In Jesus' name, we pray.
Amen.
