What The Bible Says About Self-Control
If you’re lacking self-control, whether it’s about money, food, or addiction to some things, then you should read this.
Scripture - Titus 2:11-12 (ESV)
“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.”
Observation
This verse is part of the letter Paul wrote to the believers through Titus. It speaks about how Christians are called to live after receiving salvation through Jesus Christ. Salvation doesn’t automatically change our lives overnight. We also need to train ourselves not to return to our old way of living. God understands that it's not easy for humans to let go of their former ways—hence the phrase “training us to renounce.” It is God Himself who will teach and train us to turn away from worldly desires and to develop self-control, so that we don’t fall back into sin..
Application
Humility is the key to developing self-control. Ask God to teach you what self-control truly means and to show you the areas in your life where it’s needed. These could be things like eating habits, social media use, or even struggles with pornography. Whatever it is, invite God to help you grow in discipline and rely on His strength.
Keep track of your progress. For example, if you're trying to spend less money or eat more mindfully, monitor your habits and celebrate small wins along the way.
Remember that change doesn’t happen overnight—and that’s okay. If you stumble or fall back into old habits, don’t give up. Keep seeking God, ask for His help, and don’t hesitate to ask for His forgiveness.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Forgive us for lacking self-control and letting our flesh control us. Thank You for your faithfulness to keep leading us to the truth. Teach us to have self-control and give us the wisdom we need. Let your will be done.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
