Protect Your Eyes, Protect Your Soul
What we want to see matters.
And what we want to see can lead to sins.
Scripture - Matthew 6:22-23 (ESV)
“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”
Observation
Jesus used this metaphor during the Sermon on the Mount to illustrate how what we see can significantly affect our spiritual condition. What we observe can lead us into darkness. Therefore, we should safeguard our eyes. We tend to focus on what we want to see. God wants you to keep your attention on Him, regardless of how the world attempts to distract you with negative influences, like social media, movies, books, etc. When you observe the world around you mindfully, you will realize that it is trying to divert you from the Truth.
Application
You can check your social media feed, your Netflix history, your book collection, and ask yourself: Do these things affect my heart? And if the answer is yes, you should remove them.
If you’re not sure, you can ask God to reveal what you’ve been seeing through your eyes. And don’t be surprised!
Keep your eyes on Jesus.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for teaching me how to protect my soul.
Forgive me for letting my eyes see things I shouldn’t see. I ask You to show me the part of my life that belongs to darkness and help me to remove it. Lead me on every single path that I need to take and lead me to the Truth. Let my thoughts, actions, and focus be aligned with Your will.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
